Sanding and Staining Wood Cabinets
First remove all hardware by applying a screwdriver. Lightly sand all external/viewable wood surfaces with 120-grit sandpaper. This includes base elements, doors and drawers. Sand with the grain. Once complete, move to 220-grit sandpaper and repeat the process. This will give you a smooth finish, which will prepare the wood for the stain. Dust off all wood parts with a brush. Using a foam brush, apply a wood conditioner to all wood. Once all pieces are dry, apply the stain as instructed by the manufacturer. For an optimal finish, apply two to three coats. For maximum protection, use a quality wood sealer.
