Overview:
The owners of this new home wanted a traditional
kitchen aligned with Italian Florentine style. Their penchant for
collecting antiques further reinforced the direction the designers
of Kuche+Cucina would take, beginning with the creation and
installation of the island itself. "The island was designed and
built first, with an abundance of mouldings and trimmings in and
around the ceilings crafted to match," he says. Kuche+Cucina’s
detailing reflects the shape of the island below, which ties the
room together and enhances the traditional Italian theme.
Located in the keeping room area of the home, the kitchen has many doors and access ways opening off it to the den and living room. The island is therefore a means of creating enough functional area within a long, narrow space, without interfering with flow through the room.
The island countertop complements the other countertops in durango marble, honed for an aged look. These surfaces offset the tiled flooring — a tagina porcelain that has the look and appeal of marble, clear-coated in a tumbled style for an equally aged effect. Faucets in brushed nickel demonstrate Kuche+Cucina's attention to the theme, replicated with the pot filler that extends to four gas burners.
The monochromatic palette extends to the eggshell mouldings and trimmings, with walls in patina faux finish, and almond-bone cabinetry. DiNovi says these were chosen because they enhance other color features. An example is the mosaic mural of an Italian kitchen scene set within the hearth. Another is the mosaic lostallo tiling, hand-painted in colors replicating the mural, then applied as a frieze above the countertops throughout. The cherrywood stained interior of the hutch adds further depth and detail, as do the assortment of antique pots and jugs.
