Granite is one of the hardest stones on the planet. Many people
are also not aware that granite was one of the first materials
created on earth. In fact, much of the planet's surface at one
time was covered in granite. Over time this granite hardened
even more and adopted varying colors depending on its
environmental surroundings. This accounts for all of the
resplendent characteristics we can observe in granite, such
as veining, color tone and background patterns.

Granite tiles come in several finishes, including polished, honed and flamed. Most granite tiles have a polished finish. This colossal, mirror-like finish, which romanticizes the prospective owner, is one of granite's main draws. People have been polishing granite for ages, but it is only recently that we have developed the capability to improve this process on a massive scale. Polished granite tiles work best in a formal atmosphere with classic style, whereas a honed finish is best used in a rustic styled kitchen. In either style, you'll have plenty of color variety to choose from as granite tile colors run the spectrum of colors. It's important to keep in mind that granite is a natural stone and no tile is completely identical to another. However, many colors names feature a consistent color background, which can eliminate any concerns you may have over color consistency.

Granite tiles are very dense, which make them a strong and durable material to have as a flooring surface. They handle water, scratching, fire and stains very well. However, because granite is porous, they are not stain resistant and it is best to apply a sealing treatment on granite tiles, especially if you have a high-traffic kitchen, have children and do lots of entertaining.

Consider This

Abrasive or acidic cleaners are not recommended on granite tile floors as they may scratch the finish of the tile. For this reason, you may find many stone cleaners on the market.
Fissures, which appear as thin cracks, and pitting, tiny holes, are not defects of granite tiles. They are natural characteristics of granite. Granite comes in grades. The higher the grade of granite you get, the lower incidents of pitting and fissures you will find. Make sure to check with your vendor what grade of stone you are getting. Grade A is best.
