Kitchen cabinets today come in a variety of styles,
each of which have been influenced by architectural
periods.
1. Cottage cabinets have an antique and homey
appeal to them. They feature worn finishes and
sometimes glass doors or paintings of flowers or
fruits. They have a handmade, handcrafted look.
2. Despite being categorized as traditional, Country style kitchen cabinets are rather plain and sparsely decorated. These cabinets are often painted, mainly because this style depends on bright colors.
3. Mission style cabinets derive from Spanish colonial architecture. Wood components are heavy, sturdy and feature bold, contrasting edges. Iron and glass are sometime found in design components in this style; often depicting religious symbolism.
4. Modern (or Contemporary) style cabinets offer flat, or featureless surfaces, that emphasize open space and linearity. They are not decorated at all and, unlike other styles, which almost exclusively are made from wood, there is a tendency toward man-mad materials, such as plastic or wood.
5. Shaker style kitchen cabinets were born out of an English religious movement. High quality and strong joinery techniques are emphasized in this style. Because of its relatively simple design, Shaker cabinets can be used in either traditional or modern kitchens.
6. Rustic style cabinets draw inspiration from nature and have an almost organic feel. They combine very well with natural materials, such as granite countertops and slate flooring. Complete the look by adding some plants and earth-tone decorations.
